Officers from the Yonkers Police Department were dispatched to Saint Joseph’s Medical Center shortly after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, where there was a report of a man who had suffered a gunshot to his abdomen.

The man was unresponsive after being transported to the hospital by a third party and later died from the gunshot wound.

The investigation determined that the man had been shot on Oak Street near the intersection of Elm Street.

According to police, the investigation found that the victim - later identified as Yonkers resident Chazz Leroy Mitchell, 24 - was with a group of people in front of an Oak Street home when he was approached by a suspect.

Police said a brief physical dispute ensued that quickly escalated to violence when the suspect took out a handgun and allegedly fired at least one shot at Mitchell, hitting him in the abdomen before fleeing the area.

Further investigation determined that Mitchell and the suspect were familiar with one other, and the incident was not a random event. Police said that a person of interest has been identified, but no suspect has been arrested.

The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing, and more information is expected to be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Yonkers Police Detective Division by calling (914) 377-7724 or texting the keyword YPD plus the tip to 847411.
